Awareness Saves Lives Campaign
- In recent years increased media coverage for Diabetes has primarily focusing on the issues surrounding Diabetes 2. This has led to general confusion about the various types of Diabetes, and an increased association of Diabetes in general with obesity, older age groups, sedentary lifestyles and certain ethnic groups. As such the ‘signals’ for Diabetes 1, which largely affects young people, have become less well known and understood. If you ask young people what they know about diabetes most say ‘It’s an older person’s illness’ ‘something to do with being overweight and eating too much sugar’.
- As part of our Awareness Saves Lives! Campaign, we have a poster campaign running in universities throughout the UK to build awareness of the condition and the symptoms of Diabetes type 1. We are pleased to help young people to diagnose their condition ...
- Holli Eastman, 20, studying at LSE - I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a week ago. I would just like to say thank you to your charity as it was after seeing the posters in the toilets of my university listing the symptoms of the illness that I was able to self diagnose and seek medical treatment. I just wanted to say the posters definitely work! And thank you again.
- We also run presentations in schools and colleges throughout the UK to talk face-to-face with those potentially at risk. This we hope will enable them to recognise Diabetes Type 1 in themselves and their friends and family and prevent further deaths, like Adam’s, happening again in future.
- As a result of our talk, young people understand that diabetes can potentially be a silent sudden death killer, but recognise that if diagnosed - sufferers can lead healthy and successful lives.
- Over the past year we have presented to over 4,000 teenagers.
